The .408 CheyTac may well be the ultimate cartridge for long-range sniper use. It has better ballistics than a .338 Lapua, and, past 1000 yards, it retains more energy than even a 50 BMG round. That means a more effective hit… at ranges out to two miles. See the video below for a field test of the CheyTac.

That thing is really cool.

The rifle cost 10-13K depending upon where you buy and how its completed. If purchased with suppressor and other gear as shown above you will invest no less than 15-18K. Suppressor is STW and made of Titanium. It is a great rifle and is manufactured by http://www.Cheytac.com. If you want a more economical choice you can purchase the EDM Windrunner in 408 and it’s a great rifle too and shoots as good and can be found at http://www.edmarms.com. Many of the design features are similar and Cheytac and EDM collaborated until difference separated them.
This firearm with out the optics or suppressor is $13,000, a box of ammo is around $1200 for 200 rounds.
So its not for the penny pincher firearms enthusiast.
You can buy the M310R rifle in 408 Cheytec for $5990 for the rifle and it is $1333 for a 198 rounds in an ammo can. A box of 20 rds will cost you $142 with the reloading dies for $250. One place that was selling the rifle had a special that if you buy a M310R rifle the Nightforce NXS 5.5x-22x-56mm scope was free. I don’t know if this special is still good or not.
The rifle and the delivery technology (computer) has been developed to the point that the point of interest now is centered in refining the round itself. Presently we are using our traditional alloys but I’d guess the military is stepping into the world of depleted uranium and that will not become available to enthusiasts since we can not even admit using it. It’s probably better this way – anyone been on the road to Baghdad lately?- where we pushed the Republican Guard back through the desert leaving a radio active path we won’t be using for thousands of years? We firearms buffs must content ourselves with what is commercially available and experiment with bullet shapes and weights with powder mixes.
What are the choices for bullets to reload the 408? Are there any other manufacturers of bullets than Chey-Tac, and if so, who?
I have a friend with a Chey-Tac, and although he loves the rifle and round, he says that the lack of reasonably priced bullets (less than Chey-Tac) has caused him to put the Chey-Tac away until someone else makes a bullet to reload with. He would like to find a lead core bullet rather than paying the expense to have each projectile lathe turned.
I’m aware this cartridge isn’t for the penny pincher, but it is a shame to see such a wonderful rifle/cartridge be relegated to to the back of the vault because there isn’t much of a choice for bullets for people who want to reload their own ammo.
